About Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair

This Indie game is heavily inspired by classic mascot platformers. Indeed, a sizable portion of the game’s developer, Playtonic Games, is comprised of former Rare personnel, a famed studio best known for GoldenEye 007, Perfect Dark, and, of course, mascot platformers like Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong Country.

Yooka-Laylee, a 2017 platformer, tried to revitalize the 3D mascot platformer genre but received mixed reviews upon release. The Impossible Lair takes the characters in a new direction, this time with 2D gameplay that more closely resembles Donkey Kong Country than Banjo-Kazooie.

A simple plot is what Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is all about. Yooka and Laylee are a lizard and bat duo that you play as in the game.

“Capital B” is an anthropomorphic bumblebee who gets help from a “Hivemind” device to wreck the Royal Stingdom in a cartoon-like way.” If you don’t get the Royal Beettalion Guards back, Yooka and Laylee have to do it. Capital B is hiding out in the Impossible Lair.

For the majority of the game, the Impossible Lair is played with traditional 2D platforming. Players can control both Yooka and Laylee at the same time, and they can do things like jump, swim, climb vines, and roll attacks. In this game, Laylee will fly around the stage if the player is hit. The player will have to catch her. It’s possible to do a unique air attack with Laylee and Yooki when both of them are together.
