Yahoo Killing Delicious and Other Services

It seems Yahoo is going to kill Del.icio.us and several of its own web services: Yahoo Buzz,AltaVista, Yahoo Picks, AlltheWeb.com, Yahoo Bookmarks, and MyBlogLog.

According to a picture of ‘Yahoo presentation’ leaked by Eric Marcoullier on Twitter indicates that yahoo will kill or merge a number of products and in a press note Yahoo confirmed this.

Part of our organizational streamlining involves cutting our investment in under performing or off-strategy products to put better focus on our core strengths and fund new innovation in the next year and beyond,” the company said. “We continuously evaluate and prioritize our portfolio of products and services, and do plan to shut down some products in the coming months such as Yahoo! Buzz, our Traffic APIs, and others. We will communicate specific plans when appropriate.

I don’t bother about other yahoo services, but shutting ‘Del.icio.us’ the famous social bookmarking site is very shocking to me. I have been a long time user of Delicious and bookmarked thousands of sites for reference. So now I have to save Delicious bookmarks or migrate them to another services.

I request Yahoo to rethink its decision, if Yahoo kills Delicious, then save your Delicious bookmarks.

Few ways to save your Delicious bookmarks:

  • Use Delicious export tool
  • Use Spabba , alternative to Delicious.
  • Use Backupify and save bookmarks.
  • Use Pinboard (pay)service run by original Delicious creators.
  • Update: Yahoo may not be killing Delicious, but they are trying to sell it, check out official response at Delicious blog.

    1. I too have been using Delicious for many years and think that it is disgusting if it is true! It is a valuable resource for many people.

    2. I’ve read that Yahoo is in financial difficulties, and laying off employees. Assuming that’s truly the case, cutting back on services is only to be expected. Unfortunate, but not surprising, given the state of the global economy.
