Sothink Web Video Downloader: Review and Giveaway

Today’s internet is more colorful and entertaining due to the embedded online videos. It is again another legal way to view copyrighted materials. In most cases you don’t get options to download the videos to your hard drive for offline viewing. But there are ways to download those legally using several ways only if it is not specially protected.

One obvious way to download is by using suitable addons in Firefox browser. There are three such versatile addons that I know of:

  1. Flashgot
  2. Video DownloadHelper
  3. Sothink Web video Downloader for Firefox

SourceTec Software, the maker of Sothink Web video Downloader for Firefox also develops a standalone version that is more versatile and works with other browsers Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Safari, Maxthon. It is yet to support latest version of Google Chrome and Opera.

Sothink Web video Downloader standalone can download videos from most video hosting sites like YouTube, Facebook, MSN, MySpace, Google Video, Yahoo Video, and more. It can be set to monitor following types of web media contents: FLV, WMV, ASF, MOV, MP4, M4v, 3GP, 3G2, RM, RMVD, AVI, MPG, MPEG and SWF. Monitoring SWF contents is turned off by default as that might cause unwanted pop-ups as almost all websites contain some SWF content.

Additionally the software can encode the downloaded video to whatever format user wants. It has about hundred presets of FLV, MP4, AVI, MOV, MKV, WMV, 3GP, 3G2, F4V, SWF, MP3, M4A.

  • The software can be downloaded from here

  • The installer needs to be extracted from the archive. It is digitally signed by SourceTec Software Co., Ltd.
  • Software installation went smooth and after installation Sothink Web Video Downloader sets itself at startup. But you can disable that option and launch it manually.
  • The software can encode maximum two videos at a time.
  • There is a capture history that stores links which you ignored. Capture history gets deleted each time you quit the software.

  • In my system I find it perfectly OK with videos from Internet Explorer and Firefox. New versions of Opera and Chrome are not seemed to be supported. I haven’t got chance to test it with other browsers. but it simply is a great software but it costs $19.99.

    I think this software will be great for me because I used to download video from YouTube quite frequently. Yeah I am currently using Internet Download Manager download panel to download video from web pages but it is quite buggy and bothersome because sometime the download bar would not appear in some page. This software will be great for me as I really don’t like it when I have to always convert the video format to .avi (IDM download the video as .flv) and this software are said to be able to encode the video easily (as stated in review) which I think is awesome. I download a lot from YouTube because my internet video streaming speed is extremely slow so I always download it to watch rather than streaming the video.

  5. With all the amazing videos to watch on so many different platform, bookmarking the favorites is no longer an option. In comes the Download. This will allow me to keep a copy of my favorite videos and best of all i can file them in my logical structure as they now reside on my hard drive… for easy viewing, easy finding and should the internet be down for me.. I still have the pleasure of watching my favorite videos.

    Would love a copy so this dream becomes reality.

  7. My wife is a Sunday School Teacher and very often she needs to download video clips from YouTube to share with her students. She will be excited to have this software…

  9. I am a clumsy person, and so far I never managed to download videos from the web. I now need to do so for school project. This tool might make it a lot easier to do so.
    No Facebook or Twitter, sorry.

  10. I usually use Youtube Download to download videos from Youtube, but the quality is not that good.

    I would like to use Sothink Web Download to be able to download from from Youtube and others sites with better video quailty.

  11. WOW! Sothink is such a great video ustility company. I’ve their DVD ripper which works great. It would be nice to add there youtube downloader to get some really cool travel clips so I can plan for next summer’s travel.
