Opera Software has released a updated beta version of its Opera Mobile browser (9.5) for Windows Mobile devices. This new beta brings Symbian UIQ support for the first time and carry Updated Opera Mobile Widgets that were developed using updated Opera Widgets SDK. Beta 2 comes with sample widgets like bubbles, Accuweather and a a very complete Twitter Widget Client. which serves as the top of the crop of the examples that come with the beta 2.
“Opera has built its second Opera Mobile 9.5 beta based on user-generated feedback following its first public release earlier this year,” said Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. “In addition to Opera Widgets, this new test version promises to be a smoother ride than the previous version, as we have improved page loading times and increased our focus on end-user productivity.”
Several Opera Widgets are now pre-installed in the Opera Mobile 9.5 beta builds and Opera offers downloadable widgets at widgets.opera.com.Opera’s updated Widget Software Development Kit (SDK) will enable developers to create widgets using standards-based Web technology.
The Opera Widgets SDK now includes two new features:
* Widget manager for on-device testing – Widget managers for S60, UIQ and Windows Mobile are included with in the SDK for testing widgets directly on the mobile phone.
Opera is also launching the updated SDK with a developer competition called the “X-Widget Challenge” and is offering $10,000 in cash prizes for the best cross-device widget submissions.
Opera Mobile v9.5 beta 2 is currently freely available for download. The current version is compatible with Windows Mobile 5 and 6 devices with a touchscreen.
This latest beta shows that it will be not easy for Firefox Mobile or Skyfire to go against Opera in the mobile arena. i will not be surprised if the final release don`t includes support for android too as a way to unsettle Google Chrome on Android devices. that would make for a nice payback from Opera given how much Chrome copied from Opera Browser.
