MNP : With 19 RS Change your Mobile operator

Posted by

After 1 year extension finally the Union Minister of Communications & IT Mr. Kapil Sibal officially launched Mobile Number Portability in Haryana yesterday.

Mr. Kapil Sibal said Mobile Number Portability (MNP) will be rolled out in rest of India in phased manner and by January 20, 2011 it will be  implemented all over India.

What is Mobile Number Portability (MNP) ?

For those who don’t Know, Mobile Number Portability allow subscribers to Switch other Mobile operator/network without loosing or changing their existing Mobile number. So you can use the same(old) number, even if move from one operator to other.

In simple words, with same (mobile) Number you can Jump to other Network.

How to change to other operator with MNP ?

You can Dump your existing mobile network and switch to other Network/operator by following below 3 steps. Before that make sure You shave completed a period of 90 days (from the date of activation of your mobile connection) with your current operator and also cleared all outstanding payments of your current Operator.

  1. First SMS following message ” PORT your 10 digit mobile number ” to 1900 and get UPC (Unique Porting) code.
  2. After getting UPC Code, Walk into any of retail outlets of your new mobile operator with a photocopy of valid proof of address and proof of identity and a passport size photograph. Fill the subscription form with valid 8 digit UPC code.
  3. Now wait for transformation process, it may take maximum 7 days as per timelines set by regulatory.
  • Price : Just pay 19 RS to your New operator.
  • Disconnection of services : A 2 hours of disruption in service will be informed in advance during switching process
  • SIM card replacement : your current SIM card will be replaced with your new operator SIM card.
  • Switch to anywhere in India : No, currently you can switch only within your existing telecom circle.

So Haryana circle users can take this advantage, currently there are 8 operators in Haryana :  Airtel, Aircel, BSNL, Idea, MTS, Vodafone, TTML (Tata Indicom and Tata Docomo) and Reliance Mobile (CDMA and GSM).

I’m waiting for MNP in our region Chennai, I’m ready to dump my 6 years old network Airtel and switch to Tata Docomo. So how many of you are ready to dump your existing network ?

I wish this advantage should also reach to DTH services, I think theoretically it will not be possible now because of different technologies used by DTH operators.

  1. Hi,
