Recently my company (not mentioning the Name) at Bangalore gave us good Configured Dell laptop for our Daily work , for security reasons they removed laptop DVD Drive (now days not required), and also they virtually disabled USB Device Drives or Pen Drives, which means no write access.
For me it is very important to carry out the office work in my personal Laptop, when I asked about this issue with Project manager, he told me to upload my work files to personal email and carry on the work. But my office uses a VPN for connectivity and it has Google like character and traces all typed details.
So I thought to know how to enable USB ports and came through this old trick (but new for me) with help of my kokan colleague and I’m sharing it here thinking that it will be use for newbies.

How to Unlock Locked USB ports ?
- Click “Start” button –> Run ( or win key +R) and type ” Regedit”
- Now Go to following path “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesUsbStor”
- Now in the right side details pane, double-click “Start” and change the hexadecimal value from “4” to “3”
- That’s it.

This thing would however not work in 2 conditions:
1. registry edit is disabled
2. PC/laptop is in a workgroup & has workgroup permissions set.

If it is just registry change then you may get away with above trick. For some people above simple trick may not solve problem and may even require necessary permissions to USBSTOR inf & pnf files under Windows/Inf folder.
Just for registry change you can use simple tool to disable / enable USB port (like one offered by IntelliAdmin site).
Note: latest version of IntelliAdmin USB Disabler is not freeware. I am not posting link for torrents as it might be againt this blog rules. you may need to search for torrent sites for the old version which is simple & freeware. no installation required.
Hint: search for DisableUSB.exe which 724.5KB size.
you can also use gpedit.msc to unlock removal drive

I want to access pen drive through user mode. I checked Device Manager, all ports for USB are Enabled. Also I tried to change values in regedit section. Even in bios its Enabled.
Then what is it making it disable ???
Is there any way I can access my pen drive through user mode ???

when i use my new pen drive or micro memory cards it’s work well (read and write), but when i use my friends pen drive or micro memory cards i can only read the data (copy from pen drive or micro memory cards) and i can’t write the data to my friends use.
