In May, Google redesigned the Google+ experience for the iPhone, which added full bleed photos that fall into place and bold visual elements into the social networking app. But today, it released the Google+ app for the iPad, as well as introduced new features for both the iPhone and iPad apps.
The company said that, Google+ app for iPad was designed with the device in mind ( I wonder what other device they would have had in mind when designing an app specifically for the iPad, but let’s just go with it). The news stream will feature posts based on popularity, type and orientation. They also added unique ways to interact with the app—lean back and try these out:
- Pinch and expand posts right in your stream to add your comments
- Use two fingers to drag a post from your stream to easily re-share it
- Start a Hangout from your iPad and stream it to your TV using AirPlay
The app functions similarly to the iPhone application. There are controls that allow users to reach the various facets of the social network, including their own stream, profile, circles, and account settings. Users can make changes to these aspects of the app and service that previously were read-only in the browser-based version of Google+.
Previously, the stream was limited to blocky-looking vertical list of posts. The new stream flows horizontally or vertically, depending on how you’re holding the device. There are multi-touch gestures baked into the user interface that allow users to rearrange the posts however they like. There are tools at the top of the stream that let users parse between circle groupings, such as All, What’s Hot, Nearby, etc.
With the announcement of the new iPad app, Google also added an update for the Google+ iPhone app, allowing users to create and manage them from the phone. Now users has the ability to create, and manage Events on Google+ directly from this iPad/iPhone app.Users can post a comment, upload a photo or check out who’s going. Your past event invitations are saved with all the photos and posts shared by your friends, allowing you to relive that party anytime you wish.
Also now with this app users can Start a Hangout from anywhere with their iPad/iPhone, where they can now start a video chat with up to nine friends. In order to start, tap “Hangout” from the main menu, add some friends and tap “Start”. That’s it.Turn on ringing notifications so your friends know to join the Hangout.
