Adeona - Track your Stolen Laptop

Posted by

Previously (Mar 26) we posted about Prey :A script which tracks your stolen laptop, which runs on Mac OS and Linux platforms. Thanks to my friend Kavya for referring this OpenSource tool called “Adeona” that fulfills the same task that the prey do, but with much simpler installation and also runs on Windows os .

Adeona was created in cooperation between the University of Washington and the University of California, San Diego, which was named after Adiona, known as the mythological Roman goddess in charge of returning lost children to their parents.

Adeona guide the owners of the stolen laptops to track thieves, which doesn’t exactly give you the address and phone number of the person who’s stolen laptop, but it does provide the IP address, as well as data on what nearby routers it used to connect to the Internet.

Its operation is very simple, download the latest version of Adeona for your operating system, perform the installation, then it asks you to create a key or password and generates a file about your system or laptop to send it to a free storage service that has been around for several years, called OpenDHT.If the device is lost or stolen, but maintains Internet connectivity and unmodified software, the tracking system can keep tabs on the current whereabouts of the device. This data could prove invaluable when the appropriate authorities attempt to recover the device.

Adeona has three main properties:

  • Private: uses  cryptographic mechanisms to ensure that the owner is the only party that can use the system to reveal the locations visited by a device.
  • Reliable:a uses a community-based remote storage facility, ensuring retrievability of recent location updates.
  • Open source and free: Though it is licensed under GPLv2, your locations will be placed secret.

Unlike prey that only runs on GNU Linux and Mac, Adeona runs on Windows, GNU Linux and Mac OS X.
